To make the metal handlebars of a bicycle more comfortable, cover them with handlebar tape, which is a thin, foam tape, specifically designed for bicycles. The tape provides a comfortable grip and, when properly and carefully installed, also adds a finished appearance to bicycle handlebars. Install handlebar tape any number of ways, to suit your taste and riding style. The tape is relatively inexpensive, simple to work with, and usually takes just a little time to install.
Step 1
Remove the end cap from the handlebar. Fold the rubber cover on the brake lever back away from the handlebars.
Step 2
Unwrap or cut the old tape from the handlebar. Wipe the handlebar down with a good all-purpose cleaner to remove any dirt or grime and dry it with a clean rag.
Step 3
Remove the paper backing material from one of the brake-lever strips, the adhesive foam squares included with your new handlebar tape. Cover the clamp bracket that holds the brake lever to the handlebar with the strip to protect the handlebar tape, when installed.
Step 4
Peel the end of the paper-backing material from one of the two rolls of handlebar tape. Stick the end of the tape onto the handlebar about 1 inch past the end of the handlebar.
Step 5
Make one full wrap, overlapping the tape completely to secure the tape to the handlebar. Tuck the tape into the end of the handlebar. Insert the handlebar end cap to hold the tape in place.
Step 6
Continue to wrap the tape around the handlebar, now overlapping about one-third of the tape on each wrap. Pull the tape evenly and firmly as you wrap it around the handlebars to ensure that it fits snugly. Remove the paper backing as you go.
Step 7
Wrap the tape up to--then around the back--of the brake lever. Continue wrapping until you reach the end of the handlebar. Wrap the brake cables under the tape, if desired.
Step 8
Wrap the tape just up to the end of the handlebar, about 1 inch from the handlebar stem. Cut the tape off squarely and cleanly with the scissors. Secure the end of the tape to the handlebars with several turns of electrical tape.
Step 9
Repeat this procedure on the other handlebar.
Tips and Warnings
- Park Tool recommends applying double-sided tape to the lower portion of the handlebars, where falls and abrasions more frequently damage handlebar tape. The first layer of tape will help keep the handlebar tape in place, if it becomes torn.
