Besides being uncomfortable, and sometimes unsightly, dry facial skin can cause wrinkles and even scarring over the long run. It is important to keep dry areas of the face moisturized as much as possible. The first step to treating the dry skin is to find out what is causing it to appear. Once you determine the cause, you can determine the best treatment.

Step 1

Consume plenty of water. Dry skin is caused by the lack of moisture in the body. Hydration is a key factor in fighting dry skin.

Step 2

Moisturize you face with a lotion that contains vitamin E. When picking out a lotion, look for ointments. Ointments are greasier than lotions, but they provide more moisture to battle the dry skin. A good plan of attack may be to use lotions when out and about, and apply a vitamin E-rich ointment when you go to bed.

Step 3

Purchase a humidifier. A humidifier will add extra moisture into your home. These are particularly useful in the winter months, when you are likely to turn up the heat in your home. The heat that is produced from your heating system is very dry. The moisture outside is prevented from getting into the house, so a non-circulated dry heat is formed. If you are using a wood stove, you can place water into a cast iron pot or tea kettle and place it on the stove. As the fire heats the water, the moisture will evaporate into your home, creating a homemade humidifier effect.

Step 4

Alter your bathing habits. Reduce the amount of time you are in the shower. Take showers that are as cold as you can stand. The heat from the water can continue to dry out your skin. The cooler the showers are, the longer the showers can be. Only use a mild soap on your face. Try to find a moisturizing soap that is perfume free. When you get out of the shower, pat dry, don't rub. Rubbing your face with a towel can cause skin irritation. Also, you don't want to remove all the moisture from your face. When you apply your Vitamin E lotion or ointment to your face, it will trap in the water from your shower. This will help to hydrate the affected areas.

Step 5

Avoid makeup and fragrance products as much as possible. When applying makeup, apply only a thin layer. You want your skin to breathe as much as possible. Use products that are perfume free. Take into consideration what you will have to use to remove the makeup. Do not use products that contain alcohol. Not only will it irritate the skin, but it will cause the dry skin to get worse.
