The downswing in golf is the culmination of the entire swing. The result of your entire swing is evident at the end of the downswing. According to Easy 2 Technologies, the downswing should show proper alignment, stance, grip and backswing. It happens in less than a second and requires a fluid movement of your body in a unified sequence of events. Every component in your body, including your hips, needs to work together during the downswing. For a good shot, your hips need to turn.

Step 1

Shift the inside of your right knee towards your left knee. According to Cure a Slice, this will coil up the power that you have shifted to your right side during your backswing.

Step 2

Drop your right shoulder. According to Easy 2 Technologies, shifting your body forward toward your target will allow the shoulder to drop helping with an efficient swing.

Step 3

Straighten your left leg. According to Cure a Slice, as this happens, your left heel should plant itself back on the ground, helping your hips open up.

Step 4

Rotate your hips. The movements your body made prior to this step should help turn your hips. According to Easy 2 Technologies, your stomach should face the target. The faster you turn your hips, the more power you will generate from your shot.

Tips and Warnings

  • Practice your entire swing before taking a shot. After you do your backswing, stop and think about the motion your body needs to make during the downswing. According to Easy 2 Technologies, start your downswing in slow motion. This will help you remember the steps that you need to take during your regular swing. Keep your head back and feel the weight move onto your front foot.
  • Do not start your down swing with your arms. The movement should begin with your lower body. According to Cure a Slice, if you start the downswing with your arms you will lose any power that you would have in your shot, resulting in an unflattering short shot. It will be very difficult to open and turn your hips properly by beginning with your arms as well.
