Found growing around the world in both tropical and subtropical habitats, coconuts stand out as a plant with a multitude of uses. The endosperm, more commonly referred to as the coconut meat, contains the celebrated medium chain fatty acids. These fatty acids, so-called because the contain between eight and 14 carbons in their backbone, act differently in the body compared to other fats, which gives rise to their range of effects inside the human body.

Microbial Balance

The medium chain fats demonstrate a potent antimicrobial effect in the body. Researchers from the Weston A Price Foundation explains how the unique structure of these fatty acids allows them to diffuse into the cell wall of bacteria and fungi and dissolve it, killing the organism in doing so. Caprylic acid, one of the medium chain fats, appears particularly useful for killing the troublesome candida albicans species. Consuming coconut oil as a food or supplement can help maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the intestines, increasing resistance to infection and improving digestion.

Energy Production

Because of the way they are handled in the body, coconut oil represents an excellent way to boost energy production. Dr Bruce Fife, a physician and author of "The Coconut Oil Miracle," notes how most fats move slowly from the digestive tract to the lymphatic system before becoming bound to cholesterol-containing proteins and only then released into the circulation. However, their smaller structure allows the medium chain fatty acids to reach the liver directly from the intestines via the portal vein and undergo oxidation immediately. This effect results in improved energy production and their ease of absorption can benefit individuals who do not normally absorb fats well.

Fat Burning

The different journey taken by medium chain fats can benefit your waistline as well as your energy levels. Because the liver can burn these fats so easily, the overall rate of fat burning increases. This can improve weight loss and improve body composition. A recent study, conducted by Dr Tsuji and published in the "Journal of Nutrition," investigated the effects of coconut oil on weight loss. Compared to controls, the group consuming the medium chain fats lost 40 percent more weight.
