Fine, limp hair often clings close to the head and appears lifeless. Fine hair also has the tendency to separate as the day progresses, causing it to appear dirty and stringy. Piling on more styling products and hairspray rarely helps as the weight of the products only cause the problem to become sticky and hopeless.

The right haircut can do wonders for fine hair. Cut your hair shorter, and add layers if you go shorter than chin length. If you wish to keep your hair chin length or longer, forgo the layers and concentrate on cuts that add geometrical interest such as the inverted bob. Also, adopt styling techniques that will make your hair appear thicker.

Step 1

Forgo traditional conditioner and use a light leave-in spray conditioner instead. Mist your hair with the conditioner before combing through your hair to remove tangles and make combing easier.

Step 2

Spray a root-booster product at the roots of your hair only. Avoid spraying the product on the ends of your hair.

Step 3

Lift your hair up and away from your scalp using your fingers. Dry the hair closest to the scalp with a hair dryer aimed at the roots until the root area is 100-percent dry. Dry the rest of your hair, using your fingers and hands to direct your hair in the way you wish it to go.

Step 4

Dip out a small amount of dry styling putty with your thumb. Place the product in the palm of one hand, and rub both hands to distribute the product evenly over both hands. Palm the product into your hair to add fullness, texture and hold.

Step 5

Put the finishing touches on your style using your fingers. Spray your hair with a light-hold hairspray that will allow you to run your fingers through your hair and adjust your style as the need arises.

Tips and Warnings

  • Color services thicken fine hair by plumping up the hair shaft and roughing up the protective cuticle layer. Color also adds dimension, which causes hair to appear thicker.
