To condition your hair properly, you need two types of conditioners--a daily conditioner and an intensive, weekly conditioner. Daily conditioners, used each time you shampoo, address moisture, static and shine issues. Intensive conditioners repair damage caused by styling tools and and the environment. To get as much out of your conditioning sessions as possible, select the right products. Always use conditioners specifically formulated for your hair type. Re-constructors are ideal for damaged and chemically treated hair. Light conditioners should only be used on fine hair. Hydrating conditioners are perfect for dry hair, and smoothing conditioners are formulated for naturally curly or frizzy hair.

Daily Conditioner

Step 1

Pour a quarter-sized amount of conditioner into the palm your hand. Apply the conditioner to your freshly shampooed hair, starting with the ends of your hair and working your way up.

Step 2

Wait three to five minutes while the heat of the shower activates the conditioner.

Step 3

Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm-to-cool water.

Weekly Conditioner

Step 1

Apply a liberal amount of intensive conditioner to freshly shampooed and conditioned hair. Work the product into your hair and scalp, using the palms of your hands and your fingertips.

Step 2

Place a plastic cap on your head, making sure all your hair gets pulled up into the cap. Set a timer for 15 to 20 minutes.

Step 3

Direct the flow of warm air from a hair dryer evenly over the plastic cap to activate the conditioner. Keep the flow of heat constant during the treatment.

Step 4

Remove the cap, and rinse your hair with cool water until the water runs clear.

Tips and Warnings

  • As an alternative to using a blow dryer, you can heat up a damp towel in the microwave, and wrap it around the plastic cap. You can also buy a hood attachment for your dryer that will eliminate the need of holding the dryer above your head for the duration of the treatment.
