Having a baby is both exciting and stressful. In order to make sure things go as smoothly as possible, it is best to be very prepared for delivery. It is always a good idea to get your bag ready before your due date in case you go into labor early. There are several things to consider when packing your bag for the hospital.

Who to Pack For

As the mom-to-be you need several things. But don't forget that you're not in this alone. Pack for your partner as well since he will be spending a lot of time with you in the hospital. If you have other children, you may want to pack a few items for them. Also, pack everything you will need for your new baby.

When to Pack

According to HospitalBag.org, you should have a bag packed by the end of your second trimester. This may seem very early, but you never know when you will go into labor and it is better to be well prepared then rushing around while having contractions. Pack when you feel well-rested and have a clear mind. You should be relaxed and have the help of your partner to think about all the things you are going to need.

Items for Mom

In the way of toiletries, bring a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, chap stick, a hairbrush and lotion. This list of personal hygiene items may be as extensive as you see fit, but excessive amounts of cosmetics and appliances are unnecessary and cumbersome. A hair tie is a good idea for women with long hair. Sanitary pads are also important. Though many hospitals have these available to you, most women prefer a specific brand. Choose one designed for a heavy flow. Don't forget your glasses or contacts if you wear them. In the way of clothing, bring a night gown, a T-shirt and a change of clothes to go home in. In addition, pack a nursing bra if you plan to nurse or a sports bra, which helps suppress lactation if you are not planning to nurse. No-slip socks or slippers are great for walking back and forth to the nursery.

Items for Baby

According to the American Pregnancy Association, the most important thing to remember for the baby is an infant car seat and head support. You will not be allowed to leave the hospital without one. The baby will also need something to wear home. In addition to an outfit, include a hat and booties or socks. Babies lose a lot of body heat through their heads and feet. Babies also have surprisingly long fingernails, so mittens are a good thing to have. Bring a receiving blanket to swaddle the baby. After being in the womb for nine months, babies are used to being warm and snug. If you are not breast feeding, pack a bottle and formula. Lastly, don't forget diapers and wipes.

Other Items

According to the American Pregnancy Association, you should put your health insurance card and preregistration forms in your bag so you are not scrambling for it when being admitted. Other things you will want to put in your bag include: a camera, a breast feeding book if you're nursing and your baby book so the nursery can put the baby's footprints right in it. Mints, lollipops or other hard candies also help alleviate dry mouth during labor. Magazines are not a bad idea either since there will be some downtime. Lastly, bring your address book with all of your contacts so you can share your news with your family and friends.
