Ball hockey is a popular version of the sport that is often played when a sheet of ice is not available or by floor hockey players. The game requires speed, quickness, anticipation, strength and play-making ability. One of the best ways to become a more effective player is to do exercises that increase strength and agility.
Corner Drill
In order to become an effective play maker, you have to be able to go into the corner and make effective passes to players in scoring position. To do this, you must make a decisive move and quickly find an open teammate. In this drill, the coach tosses the hockey ball into the corner and the first player chases it down and passes to his teammate in the slot area in front of the goal. Give each player the chance to be the passer and shooter five times.
Box Jumping
In order to play with a strong lower base, you have to do exercises to build strength in your legs and buttocks. You want strength in this area because you don't want to be checked off the ball when you have to fight for it. Stand to the left of a 14-inch square box and jump over it to the right. Jump back over it so you are in the starting position. Do this 15 times. Take a 30-second break and then repeat the drill.
Quick Pass Drill
Run over the blue line with the ball and quickly pass to your teammate on the right. Take the pass back from him and then pass to your left wing. Move to the slot area in front of the net and prepare to shoot. This takes great agility and will improve your quickness around the net and make you a more effective scorer.
Leaded Ball Drill
Tape up the hockey ball with lead tape. This will add about 2-to-3 ounces to the weight of the ball and it will help you become a stronger stick handler because if you can handle a heavy hockey ball you can handle a lighter one in game situations. Stick handle the length of the hockey rink and back, and then do it again to improve your hand and wrist strength.
Dot Drill
Stand in the center of the dot to the right of the goaltender. Place four rubber dots within three feet of the center dot. Jump from the center dot to the rear dot on the right and take a quick wrist shot. Jump back to the dot in the middle. Jump to the rear dot on the left and take a slap shot and return to the starting point. Jump to the front right dot and take a snap shot and then return to the starting point. Jump to the front left dot and fire a backhand shot. Repeat the drill to improve agility and shooting skills.
