Whether for work or a special event, you may occasionally need to cover a tattoo. Because tattoo ink tends to be very dark, this can be difficult---but not impossible---to achieve. The process requires both time and patience, because you must allow sufficient time for several layers of makeup to dry. If you are covering your tattoo for a special event, it is a good idea to practice several times before that day in order to ensure you can fully cover the tattoo.

Step 1

Clean the skin with soap and water and remove any hair from the area, if possible. Having a clean and hairless "canvas" allows makeup to spread evenly and reduces the noticability of your tattoo, according to BecomeGorgeous.com.

Step 2

Apply an initial layer of concealer to the tattoo. Pat it lightly with your fingertip---rubbing the concealer in will not effectively cover a tattoo. Select a concealer that is lighter than the skin and has a yellowish tint, which helps neutralize the appearance of blue or black tattoos. Extend the concealer slightly outside the perimeter of the tattoo---this will help the makeup blend better with the skin, according to the website Makeup Notebook.

Step 3

Dip a sponge applicator into your foundation. Dab the foundation over the tattoo---again, do not rub. This foundation color should exactly match the color of your skin. Allow this layer of makeup several minutes to dry completely.

Step 4

Apply additional layers of foundation as needed until the tattoo is no longer visible. Allow plenty of time to dry between layers.

Step 5

Dust on a translucent powder over the tattoo in order to set the makeup in place, recommends Makeup Notebook. The powder color should match that of your skin, because it is the final layer. Dab any remaining powder off with a tissue.

Tips and Warnings

  • Look for makeup products labeled "non-comedogenic." This signifies that the makeup will not clog pores, an important designation when you are applying several layers of makeup. If your tattoo is very dark, you may require a professional-grade product to cover the tattoo, according to the website My Style. These products, which are sold by theatrical makeup companies, are very opaque when applied to the skin because they contain more pigment than typical makeup brands.
