People have worn nose rings for centuries. Types of jewelry worn in nose piercings include rings, studs and screws. However, it is sometimes necessary to take out the jewelry. You can usually remove the nose jewelry by yourself if you take proper precautions.
Step 1
Wash your hands. Your hands must be thoroughly clean with an antibacterial soap and water before touching your piercing because of the risk of introducing bacteria that could cause infection.
Step 2
Apply a lubricant, such as petroleum jelly, around the jewelry with the tips of your fingers to help the ring slide out more easily.
Step 3
Remove the backing of the jewelry if it is the stud style of ring. You need to twist the backing counterclockwise to loosen it and remove it. If you cannot do this with your fingers, disinfect a pair of tweezers and use those to grip and twist the backing.
Step 4
Pull the jewelry out gently. If it is a ring style, you need to twist the ring clockwise until it comes out.
Tips and Warnings
- Re-insert jewelry within 24 hours if your nose was pierced within the past six months and you do not want the piercing to close.
- If any part of the nose jewelry has become embedded in the piercing, you must seek medical attention. A doctor may need to perform surgery to remove the embedded jewelry.
