Contraindications of the Fruitarian Diet

The fruitarian diet is a type of vegan diet. It consists of only the fruit of the plant, according to the Vegetarian Resource Group. Foods allowed on the fruitarian diet include all fresh fruits, nuts, seeds, tomatoes, peas, beans and dried fruits. Some fruitarians will only eat the fruit of the plant to prevent the death of the plant. Other fruitarians will eat all edible portions of the fruit or vegetable.

Low in Protein

The fruitarian diet is a low protein diet. The Vegetarian Resource Group says people who limit their intake to mostly fruits and vegetables consume about 30 to 40 gm of protein a day. Adults need 46 to 56 gm of protein a day, explains the Vegetarian Resource Group. Inadequate protein intake can lead to fatigue, diarrhea, muscle loss, irritability, lethargy and swelling, according to Medline Plus. Food sources of protein on the Fruitarian Diet include nuts, seeds and beans.

Low in Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is needed for red blood cell formation, DNA synthesis and neurological function. Animal products and fortified cereals are the primary sources of vitamin B12 in the diet. Strict vegetarians, such as those who follow the fruitarian diet, do not eat any animal products placing them at risk for deficiency, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements.

Low in Iron

The fruitarian diet is a low iron diet, according to Diet.com. Low intakes of iron lead to iron deficiency anemia, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements. Iron makes up a number of different enzymes and protein in the body, and is the primary transporter of oxygen. Beans are the only dietary source of iron on the fruitarian diet. The iron found in beans is best absorbed with foods high in vitamin C such as tomatoes and citrus fruits.

Low in Calcium

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body. It plays an important role in bone structure and health. While some vegetables and nuts contain calcium, the fruitarian diet does not supply adequate amounts of calcium to meet needs. Food sources of calcium on the fruitarian diet include almonds and sesame seeds.
