As cute as babies are, they're inherently messy. Mealtime is the most common time for stains to accumulate on your little one's clothing. Although it may seem frustrating to try to keep your baby in fresh clean clothes that look nice, common baby stains are actually quite simple to get rid of. For whatever the bib doesn't catch, eliminating stains on baby clothes is more time-consuming than it is difficult.
Remove Spit-Up Stains
Step 1
Blot the area with a cloth to remove fresh spit up, and rinse the stain under cold running water. If the stain is older, scrape away any dried, stuck-on debris with a plastic utensil before rinsing the area under cold running water.
Step 2
Lay the garment with the stain facing up and cover the stained area with a thick layer of baking soda.
Step 3
Pour club soda on top of the baking soda to dampen it. Baking soda and club soda will fizz considerably when combined.
Step 4
Scrub the area with an old toothbrush to help lift the stain.
Step 5
Allow the area to air dry before laundering the garment in warm water with a scoop of bleach-free laundry detergent.
Remove Baby Food Stains
Step 1
Wipe away fresh baby food with a clean, damp cloth or sponge. Scrape away dried baby food with a plastic utensil.
Step 2
Rinse the affected area under cold running water.
Step 3
Pour liquid bleach-free laundry detergent onto the area to cover it.
Step 4
Work the detergent gently into the stain with a clean cloth or sponge.
Step 5
Allow the garment to soak for 15 to 20 minutes before laundering it in warm water with the liquid detergent.
Tips and Warnings
- Adding a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle can help to eliminate any soap residue or lingering odors.
- Visually inspect the stained area after taking the garment out of the washing machine. If the stain is still there, repeat the stain removal process before drying it. Heat will cook the stain into the fabric, making it very difficult, if not impossible, to remove.
