The best way to hang a heavy bag is with a chain from a load-bearing ceiling beam. This provides the greatest support with the least bag movement. While it is possible to hang a heavy bag with a wall mount or from a heavy bag stand, wall mounts have much lower weight limits than ceiling beams and can tear out when the heavy bag swings. Heavy bag stands often move when subjected to intense pounding.
Step 1
Find the perfect place to hang the heavy bag. Basements and garages are ideal. Many have exposed weight-bearing ceiling beams and plenty of room to move around. The location must be uncluttered. The heavy bag must be able to swing freely in every direction without hitting anything. Make sure that the floor below the heavy bag is level, even and not slippery. The location should also be considered permanent since moving a heavy bag is difficult.
Step 2
Measure the length of the heavy bag, the distance from the bottom of the ceiling beam to the ground, and the distance around the ceiling beam. Determine how high you want the heavy bag to hang above the ground--typically 2 feet. Start with the height of the beam. Subtract the length of the heavy bag and the height the bag above the ground. Add to this number the distance around the ceiling beam then double it. This is the length of the chain you will need. For example, a 9-foot-high beam holding a 5-foot-long heavy bag hanging 2 feet off the ground, will hang 2 feet from the beam. If the beam is 1 foot around, you will need a 6-foot-long chain.
Step 3
Wrap the chain around the ceiling beam twice. This provides extra support for the heavy bag and prevents it from moving along the beam when struck. Make sure that the ends of the chain are even when hanging down.
Step 4
Connect both ends of the chain with an S-hook. This simple hook in the shape of an "S" is available at most hardware stores. Both sides of the chain should be at the top of the "S" leaving the bottom of the "S" open.
Step 5
Lift the top of the heavy bag above the S-hook to connect it. Get help with this step. One person lifts the heavy bag on the ladder while the other attaches the heavy bag chain to the bottom of the S-hook.
Step 6
Carefully lower the heavy bag. Keep your distance while testing whether the chain and support beam support its weight. If they do, swing the heavy bag around in every direction to ensure that there is ample room and that the chain does not slip.
