Listerine, an antimicrobial mouthwash that reduces gingivitis and plaque, is available over the counter. Gingivitis and plaque are bacterial infections associated with the early stages of periodontal disease, according to the American Dental Association. In conjunction with daily oral hygiene that includes brushing and flossing, using Listerine can help prevent or stop the progression of periodontal, or gum disease. The condition leads to bleeding gums, bad breath and bone loss. If you have periodontal disease, you should see your dentist for regularly scheduled checkups.
Step 1
Put about 2/3 fluid oz., or 4 tsp. of Listerine, into your mouth.
Step 2
Swish from side to side to ensure it gets on your teeth.
Step 3
Spit it out. Do not swallow it.
Tips and Warnings
- Use Listerine twice daily--once in the morning and once before bedtime--to help prevent or stop the spread of periodontal disease. To benefit from the properties that help Listerine deal with periodontal disease, do not use Listerine PocketPaks. This version of Listerine has not been shown to have an effect on gingivitis and plaque, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
- Children under the age of 12 should not use Listerine. Contact a Poison Control Center immediately if you accidentally swallow more Listerine than the dosage used for rinsing.
