A girl's softball pitching machine is a mechanical device used during practice to help players improve their swing. It's similar to a baseball pitching machine, but a softball unit is designed for balls of a larger diameter.

Function

A girl's softball pitching machine is meant to throw accurate pitches. An individual feeds the balls into the machine feeder, which places the ball in the shoot and then the balls are projected toward the batter. The speed of the pitch can be adjusted to provide all skill levels an opportunity to practice. The unit shifts up and down to accommodate the difference in speed, so a short period of adjusting the unit prior to starting is required to ensure that it's pitching the softball where intended.

Benefits

Swing repetitions will improve your muscle memory, meaning you'll be able to replicate the correct technique. This improvement in coordination should transfer into competition so you will be better skilled when it comes to facing live pitching.

Features

The most basic of softball pitching machines continually projects the same fastball pitch. Continually receiving the same pitch helps you work on the nuances of your swing. More advanced machines project multiple pitches, such as change-ups and pitches with movement. These are beneficial for batters who have developed their swing and are working on reacting to different speeds and covering different locations. The balls that are used in the pitching machine are made of hard rubber and are designed specifically for pitching machines. Do not use regulation softballs in the unit because the tires in the machine will wear faster.

Practice

To see significant improvements, use the machine to practice four to five days per week. In each practice session, you should complete about 100 repetitions. Do not continue practicing if you feel yourself fatiguing because your swinging technique can be adversely affected if you begin to complete repetitions with incorrect technique.

Considerations

You usually need a partner to feed the balls into the machine. Some units come with an automatic feeder, but they're rare. Having to wait for a partner can limit the amount of training time. Also, you can take the pitching machine out onto a field, but must have a power source and an extension cord long enough to reach the plug. A batting cage is beneficial when using a pitching machine because it keeps the balls that you hit in a central area and allows you to pick them up faster and move onto the next round.
