Levaquin is a medication in a class of drugs known as quinolone antibiotics. According to Drugs.com, Levaquin is used to treat bacterial infections of the skin, sinuses, kidneys, bladder, or prostate and for the treatment of bacterial infections that cause bronchitis or pneumonia. Patients who are prescribed Levaquin should take this medication for the entire time for which it is prescribed as discontinuing treatment early may lead to a return or worsening of infection. There are some side effects associated with Levaquin.
Photosensitivity
Patients taking Levaquin may experience photosensitivity, or an increased sensitivity to the sun. Users should avoid direct sunlight, as well as tanning beds and sunlamps while taking Levaquin. The use of protective clothing and sunblock may help protect the skin from sunburn and rash.
Stomach Discomfort
Levaquin may cause stomach discomfort in some users. Symptoms can include nausea, diarrhea and constipation. Taking Levaquin with food may help lessen these effects. Small dietary changes, such as adhering to a bland diet and eating small meals throughout the day, may help diminish stomach discomfort. The addition of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may help to combat constipation. Those who experience severe or persistent diarrhea while taking Levaquin may be at risk for developing dehydration and should consult their physicians.
Headache and Dizziness
Levaquin may lead to headache and dizziness in some users. These side effects may subside as the body adjusts to Levaquin. Patients should consult their physicians regarding the use of an over-the-counter medication such as acetaminophen for the relief of occasional headache pain and discomfort.
Vaginal Itching and Discharge
Levaquin may cause vaginal itching and discharge in some women. These may be symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection. While antibiotics work to kill bad bacteria in the body, they also kill some of the body's good bacteria; this creates an environment susceptible to the overgrowth of yeast, or candida. Taking a probiotic supplement or eating foods high in natural probiotics, such as yogurt, may help reduce the risk of developing a yeast infection. Additional symptoms associated with a vaginal yeast infection include vaginal redness, irritation and discomfort during intercourse. Women who think they may have a vaginal yeast infection should consult their gynecologists.
