The moderate climate of the Redwood forest in California can be a delight for those with breathing problems or allergies. A relatively low humidity level can make being outdoors and taking in the sights easier to do. Visitors who wish to explore this area may want to consider camping in an RV inside the Redwood National Park to be fully rested for the next day's activities.

Facilities

There are four campgrounds in the Redwood Forest National Park that allow RV camping. These are Jedediah Smith, Gold Bluffs Beach, Elk Prairie and Mill Creek. These campgrounds have fire pits, barbecue grills, trash receptacles, campfire areas and bear-proof lockers to store food in. Visitor's Centers are located at Jedediah Smith Campground and Elk Prairie Campground.

Reservations

All of the campgrounds in the Redwood Forest National Park are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Reservations are however recommended if you are planning to visit between May 1 and Sept. 30. Reservations may be made by contacting the park directly. The exception is Gold Bluffs Beach Campground, which does not take reservations.

Trailer Length

The maximum trailer length at Mill Creek Campground is 31 feet or 27 feet if towed. Jedediah Smith Campground can accommodate RVs that are up to 36-feet or 31-foot long trailers. Elk Prairie allows 27-foot long RVs and 24-foot long trailers. Gold Bluffs Beach allows recreational vehicles that are up to 24 foot in length; trailers are not allowed.

Utilities

There are no water, sewer or electric hookups at any of the campgrounds in the Redwood Forest National Park. Campgrounds do have restrooms with flushing toilets and hot showers. There is a dump station located at each facility as well. Public phones are limited and cell phone coverage may be sporadic.

Weather

Temperatures in the Redwood National Park fluctuate very little throughout the year. The normal range is between 40 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Winter temperatures are along the low end of the scale. There is also usually a great deal of rain and snow during this time. Summer temperatures are nearer the 60 degree mark with moderate precipitation.

Pets

RV campers may bring pets if they are staying at Gold Bluffs Beach Campground. Animals must be on a leash less than 6 feet long whenever they are outside the camper. They may be taken to picnic areas within the park as well as the Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center. Pets are not permitted on any trails in the park.

Recreation and Activities

Many activities can be enjoyed by RV campers in the Redwood National Park. These include hiking, fishing, kayaking, horseback riding, bicycling and nature watching. During the summer months, members of the Tolowa and Yurok Indian tribes perform demonstrations of their native dances for the public. There are also a number of ranger-led activities such as nature walks and tide pool walks.
