Named after the Natchitoches Indian tribe, Natchitoches is the oldest city in Louisiana, having been formed in 1714. While the town is small, with its 31 bed and breakfasts it is considered the bed and breakfast capital of Louisiana. It is also home to the Natchitoches Christmas Lights Festival, considered the oldest holiday celebration in Louisiana. The downtown district has many quaint shops, restaurants and art galleries. An array of enjoyable activities make Natchitoches worth a visit.

Kisatchie National Forest Recreation Complex

Kisatchie National Forest recreation complex is located on the banks of Kisatchie Bayou and surrounded by thick, lush natural landscapes. During warm weather months, white sandy beaches are good for swimming. Trails up- and downstream make it easy to get to the water. Picnic tables with barbecue pits are available. Fishing enthusiasts enjoy catfish and bream fishing here, and non-motorized boating is permitted. The campground in the bayou has a designated fee area and is near the day-use area.

Melrose Plantation

Melrose Plantation, a remarkable plantation located in Natchitoches, is a National Historic Landmark. Visitors can take guided tours of the main house and grounds. Showcasing perhaps the oldest buildings with African design in the country, it was the first plantation built by and for free blacks. Melrose is open from 12:00 to 4:00 daily.

Festivals

Natchitoches holds numerous festivals and events during the year. One is the Cane River Zydeco Festival and Poker Run, usually held around early September. Zydeco music is an accordion-based musical style that originated in the early 19th century from Creole music. The Poker Run, which goes through Natchitoches Parish, is for charity. The famous Christmas Lights Festival, which takes place yearly from late November to early January, is centered around the historic district. The festival draws over 100,000 visitors and includes a parade and an arts and crafts show.

Northwestern Hills Golf Course

Golfers enjoy play at Northwestern Hills Golf Course in Natchitoches. This 18-hole course measures 6,107 yards from the back tees for a par of 72. It has wide-open fairways and scattered pine and willow trees, with water hazards near two of the holes. Good golfers are rewarded, but the course is also hospitable to players who are less skilled.

Bayou Pierre Alligator Park

Many Americans are fascinated by alligators and associate them with Louisiana. Bayou Pierre Alligator Park is an adventure the whole family can enjoy. This five-acre park offers Cajun countryside, Cajun music and Cajun cuisine. Visitors walk over protected walkways and platforms that provide good views of the alligators. On Alligator Island they are surrounded by more than 100 of these mysterious creatures. A demonstration presents information about the alligator farming industry and efforts to conserve the American alligator.
