If you have a toddler who is past the baby-bottle stage, chances are you offer him a sippy cup when he is thirsty. A sippy cup has a no-spill, screw top with an attached spout. More advanced than a bottle, but not as messy as an ordinary cup, drinking fluids release from the spout as the child sucks, not as he tips. Like all sippy cups, Avent brand sippy cups require proper cleaning and sterilization in between uses to remove germs and bacteria.

Step 1

Unscrew the spout from the Avent sippy cup. Pour any remaining contents inside the Avent sippy cup into the sink.

Step 2

Fill a small basin with warm water and one squirt of dish soap. Place the spout and Avent sippy cup in the basin. Wash the Avent sippy cup with a cellulose sponge and the soapy water.

Step 3

Remove the Avent sippy cup and spout from the soapy water. Rinse the soap from the sippy cup with water from the tap.

Step 4

Bring a medium pot of water to a boil on your stovetop. Set the Avent sippy cup in the boiling water.

Step 5

Allow the Avent sippy cup and spout to boil for five minutes. Turn off the burner after five minutes.

Step 6

Remove the Avent sippy cup and spout from the boiled water using a pair of tongs. Place the Avent sippy cup in a dish rack to air-dry.

Step 7

Reattach the spout to the Avent sippy cup after drying. Store the Avent sippy cup in a drawer or cabinet until the next use.

Tips and Warnings

  • Avent sippy cups are dishwasher safe. The heat of the water will sterilize the cup. Place the Avent sippy cup in the top rack of your dishwasher for cleaning.
