Canoe camping is an activity enjoyed during the summer months by individuals, families and groups of people. Packing food is one of the biggest challenges that is faced by canoe campers. While this type of camping allows for more space than traditional backpacking, the food packed must be able to stay fresh without any type of cooling system and it must be able to provide energy for canoeing.
Packaged Food
Because you will not be weighed down with heavy backpacking equipment, you will be able to bring along a wider variety of food when you go canoe camping. Chili, beef stew, chicken and dumplings and vegetables in cans will provide a dinner that can be prepared easily and quickly. For desserts, foods such as cookies, canned fruits, granola and cereals are good choices. Make sure to bring along a trash bag or other receptacle so that any leftover cans can be easily carried with you when you leave the wilderness.
Rice and Pasta
Rice and pasta are able to be cooked with water and require no refrigeration whatsoever, making them both a great choice for your camping trip. They are also smart choices as they provide lots of energy for performing the physical activities in canoeing and they are very light, making them easy to transport. On a cold outdoor evening, a hot bowl of pasta is a popular choice of many campers after a long day of canoeing. To make the meal even easier, purchase the varieties of rice and pasta that is already seasoned. If you enjoy cooking outdoors, you can pack plain pasta and make a hearty meal by mixing it with vegetables, sauces and spices. For easier transportation, remove the rice and pasta from the cardboard boxes that they come in and pack them in plastic bags.
Oatmeal
A hot bowl of oatmeal can provide you with important energy for a long day in the canoe and can warm you up on cold mornings before the sun comes up. Oatmeal can be made easily. Individual packets of oatmeal that is already flavored provide an easy option, or you can fill a plastic bag with dried oats. If choosing the dried oats, be sure to bring along dried fruit, raisins, cinnamon, sugar or brown sugar to give your oatmeal flavor and make it more filling.
