If your child is struggling with constipation for an extended period of time, your pediatrician may recommend the administration of an enema. Children's enemas purchased from the pharmacy or grocery store usually contain sodium biphosphate, sodium phosphate, saline or mineral oil. According to Texas Children's Pediatric Associates, liquid enemas help to stimulate bowel movements. An enema consists of the bag that holds the phosphate, saline or mineral oil solution and a lubricated tube that eases the insertion of the enema and guides the fluid into the rectum.
Step 1
Wash your hands with warm water and antibacterial soap. Pat your hands dry with a clean towel.
Step 2
Position your child on his stomach with his knees pulled inward towards his chest. Remove the enema from the packaging.
Step 3
Insert the enema approximately 1 to 2 inches into your child's rectum. You may need to apply a slight amount of pressure to insert the tip of the enema.
Step 4
Squeeze the enema bag, releasing the contents into your child's rectum. Press your child's buttocks together using your hands to keep her from pushing out the liquid from the enema.
Step 5
Hold this position for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Guide your child quickly to the bathroom when he feels an overwhelming urge to make a bowel movement. Discard the enema.
Tips and Warnings
- Having your child drink one to two 8-ounce glasses of water prior to giving the enema can help reduce the likelihood of dehydration. If your child is feeling uncomfortable on her stomach, have her change position. Have her lie on her back as if you were changing a diaper or on her side with her knees pulled in towards her chest.
- Do not force the enema into your child's rectum. Gentle pressure applied is all that is necessary. Contact your doctor immediately if your child has pain that continues well after the insertion of the enema or if blood is present in his stool. Excess amounts of loose stool or vomiting also requires a call to your child's physician.
