One of the ways in which the Internet has changed our lives is that we can now use it to get healthier. Many websites offer services that allow users to enter the foods they eat, receive the nutritional information for those foods and track this information over time. Here's how to get started in keeping track of your calories online.

Step 1

Search the Web for the various sites that allow you to track your calories online, such as Fit Day and the Daily Plate. Take note of the different features each site allows. Many sites offer similar content, but one may have an interface or layout that you like best.

Step 2

Register for your site of choice. Create a user name and password you'll remember. You'll also have to enter your e-mail address and some basic personal information such as your full name. In addition, many sites require you to enter your height, weight and activity level.

Step 3

Use the site's tools to enter the nutritional information for the foods you've eaten. If you can't get to a computer after every meal, record your food and drink intake so that you can enter it when you have computer access.

Tips and Warnings

  • The best way to track your calories is if you don't have any gaps in your records. Even taking one meal off from tracking can send your nutritional goals into a tailspin. If you're worried about forgetting, make your site of choice your browser's home page so you can never avoid it.
  • If your calorie tracking is part of an attempt to change your eating habits, talk with your doctor first. Your doctor can diagnose any conditions you may not be aware of, as well as give you expert advice on your new diet. Most calorie tracking sites are free, but some may charge for "premium" services.
