Weight loss can be a never-ending challenge for many people. Diet programs can aid in weight loss, and are available in books, DVDs or as subscriptions that provide the actual meals designed to help you lose weight. The effectiveness of some diets over the long-term can vary depending on the individual, and some might have adverse health effects. Consult with a licensed heath care practitioner or nutritionist before embarking on a diet to tailor it to your specific needs.

Atkins Diet

The Atkins Diet is a very popular method for losing weight. The diet focuses on eliminating carbohydrates from the diet, and eating mostly protein and fats. You can eat all the steak, eggs, butter, milk, and cheese you want on the Atkins Diet, and you will lose weight according to the claims. Vanderbilt University's Health Psychology website states there are countless testimonials and surveys that show the Atkins Diet produces weight loss.

The medical establishment has been sharply critical of the diet, due to the amount of saturated fats Atkins dieters tend to consume. Following the Atkins Diet will also restrict you from obtaining important fiber and phytonutrients which are available in many carbohydrate-rich foods. Weight loss can be rapid on the Atkins Diet, but please discuss with a physician to ensure it is safe to embark on in your specific case.

Ornish Diet

The University of Arizona Sarver Heart Center states that the Ornish diet, developed by Dr. Dean Ornish, might be effective in helping to lose weight. The Ornish diet requires a vegetarian eating plan that restricts dietary fat consumption to 10 percent of total calories per day. Cholesterol is restricted to five milligrams per day. While the diet can produce significant weight loss, it can be difficult to follow the strict fat and cholesterol requirements. Dieters must read all food labels to monitor fat intake. Stress relief techniques and some exercise are part of the diet plan.

NutriSystem

NutriSystem is a weight loss diet plan that strictly controls the meals you eat by preparing them for dieters. Participants receive 28 days worth of food delivered to them. Each day's meals consist of breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack. A few items from the grocery store are allowed. Weight loss tracking, counseling and educational resources are available on the company's website. Colorado State University states that the food provided can be expensive, and the counseling is not provided by Registered Dietitians. The benefits are that no calorie-counting is required, and the food is proportioned to aid in weight-loss. This makes it easy to follow.
