Digital thermometers come in different styles appropriate for different age groups. The University of Maryland Medical Center explains that in children, a temperature of 99.8 degrees Fahrenheit and above constitutes a fever. If you have a toddler who is not feeling well, and you suspect that he may have a fever, a digital ear thermometer or a standard digital thermometer is your best bet. Either type will produce an accurate reading, and more quickly than the traditional mercury-free, shake-down variety.
The Ear
Step 1
Slip a clean, disposable probe over the tip of the digital ear thermometer. Cradle your toddler's head in one hand, while holding the thermometer in the other.
Step 2
Insert the tip of the digital ear thermometer into the opening of the inner ear. Push the "on" button to begin taking a temperature reading.
Step 3
Wait for the beep that signals removal. Newer models can take temperature readings in one second, while older models may need up to 30 seconds to achieve a proper reading.
Step 4
Remove the digital ear thermometer after the beep. Take note of the temperature reading.
Step 5
Discard the used disposable probe. Store the digital thermometer for later use.
Under the Arm
Step 1
Saturate a cotton ball with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol. Rub the cotton ball over the tip of the digital thermometer to kill germs and bacteria.
Step 2
Sit your toddler on your lap. Remove your toddler's shirt if he is wearing one, or take one arm out of the armhole, leaving the arm exposed.
Step 3
Raise your toddler's arm. Press the tip of the digital thermometer against the inner fold of her underarm.
Step 4
Pull your toddler's arm firmly against his side while holding the digital thermometer in place. Press the "on" button and wait for the beep that prompts removal, from one to 30 seconds.
Step 5
Lift your toddler's arm after you hear the beep and remove the digital thermometer. Take note of the temperature reading.
Step 6
Clean the tip of the thermometer with a fresh cotton ball saturated with alcohol. Store the digital thermometer for future use.
Tips and Warnings
- Always read the packaging instructions that came with your digital thermometer before use.
- Do not attempt to take an oral reading with a digital thermometer. Toddlers are unable to hold the thermometer in their mouth for any length of time, so temperature readings are usually not accurate.
