It is not unusual for individuals on a raw food diet to indulge in pizza, ice cream, burgers and chocolate pie. Of course, all of these raw items are made with uncooked and unprocessed fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and vegetable oils prepared with precision to match the flavors of these conventional foods. Individuals who follow a raw food diet choose to eat primarily plant-based raw foods in order to obtain the highest nutrient and enzyme quality from the food. They do not cook foods above 116 degrees F because cooking destroys the live enzymes in food and diminishes the nutrients. Proponents of the diet emphasize improved digestion, increased energy, weight loss and clearer skin.

Stock your kitchen with fresh fruits, vegetables, raw nuts, seeds and cold-pressed olive oil. Dark, leafy greens are a necessity as they provide important sources of iron and protein for raw foodists. Donate your old processed foods to a food pantry or give away to family and friends.

Research Vitamin B12

Raw foodists have varying opinions on vitamin B12. Many health experts advise vegetarians and vegans to consume a B12 supplement. Some individuals who follow a raw food diet choose not to consume a supplement and believe human intestines already produce B12 that is absorbed and used by the body. Talk to your doctor or conduct your own research to make a personal choice on the issue.
