Finding a job online is mostly about being resourceful and utilizing the power of the Internet. While job hunting is still about who you know, it is also about who's in your network. Your network is more than just your personal relationships. Your network includes online relationships, such as social networking sites, industry trade forums and specific company websites. Companies are now turning to the Internet before paying for traditional means to advertise openings, according to Slate.com.

Step 1

Determine the discipline or industry you would like to work in. Use the Internet to search using keywords about the job or discipline.

Step 2

Research the industry that interests you. Once you find information, review job descriptions and postings and read information pertaining to the industry. For example, look at press releases posted online about the industry and specific companies. These offer information about whether a company is growing or downsizing. Use the research to establish the skills that are necessary to perform the job.

Step 3

Find companies that offer positions in the industry. Search companies that typically hire for the position you desire. Then, determine competitors. Because most employers offer information about careers or employment online, take time to review corporate websites.

Step 4

Take an inventory of your own skill set by writing down you strengths and weaknesses as well as likes and dislikes. Be realistic. Putting it on paper provides a visual reminder of your abilities as well as a way to see if they match up with the job you desire.

Step 5

Establish where jobs for your desired industry are found online. For example, review company websites, job forums in the industry, trade associations, college alumni groups or recruiting firm websites.

  • Use social media sites to search for jobs and openings, such as Twitter and Facebook. Social media allows you learn not only the inside details about the industry but also lets you engage in dialogue with other professionals online. Keep track of the positions you have applied to so that you have a reference when your receive a call or feedback from a potential employer.
  • Do not provide personal information, such as your Social Security number or driver's license number, when applying for a job online.
