Children can make much more noise outdoors and they have much more room to run around and be wild compared to indoor environments. For kids' enjoyment, and parents' sanity, outdoor activities and crafts are an excellent way to keep children engaged and active. Children can get antsy and keeping them cooped up indoors can cause agitation. Outdoor activities and crafts are an inexpensive way to entertain children.

Fishing

The thrill of catching a fish can captivate adults, so imagine how a child feels when he catches a fish. Fishing is an outdoor activity for kids that will entertain them and will also teach them about nature and animals. Though the equipment required for fishing can get costly, teaching children how to fish at a young age can hook them for life. Instead of trying your luck at a river or lake, try taking children to a stocked pond where the likelihood of catching multiple fish is high. A day without catching fish can turn children off to the activity. Also, the Big Fishing Tips website advises that kids between 12 and 17 years of age need junior fishing permits. Kids under 12 do not need permits.

Capture the Flag

Capture the Flag is an outdoor game that is best played on a level grass surface, and requires lots of running. Split the children into two equal teams, put each time on one side of a line and give each team a flag. The squads each place their flag on their half of the line and the object of the game is to run to the opponents' side of the line and grab their flag. But if you are caught by an opponent while on the wrong side of the line and the opponent says "caught" three times while holding you, you are a prisoner and must leave the game. Your teammates can get you out of prison by tagging you. The first team to grab the flag and bring it back across the line wins.

Outdoor Canvas

Children can paint a mural on an old bed sheet while outdoors, using objects from nature. According to the Kids Craft Zone website, hang a bed sheet from a clothesline and fill a few tubs of paint for the children to use. Find objects like sticks, rocks, leaves and grass and dip them in paint, then let the children make their own art.
