Natural disasters can strike at any time, leaving victims without easy access to food. A pandemic flu outbreak or similar health crisis could result in grocery stores being closed down. The New Jersey Office of Emergency Management recommends preparing an emergency food supply that will last for at least two weeks. You also need utensils, a can opener, baby formula and nonperishable pet food.
Proteins
Meats, nuts, beans and cheese are high in protein and are an important part of any emergency food supply. Stock canned fish, poultry and meat, such as chili and beef stew, shelf-stable cheese, peanut and other nut butters, nuts and canned beans.
Fruits and Vegetables
Canned fruits, canned vegetables and dried fruits are important food items to stock. Canned fruit and vegetable juices are also nutritious choices.
Grains
Grains that don't require cooking are best for your emergency food supply. Granola, ready-to-eat cereals, instant oatmeal, pretzels, granola bars and assorted crackers to use in place of bread should be part of your cache.
Other Food Items
Stock air-dried or freeze-dried foods, non-carbonated soft drinks, jelly, hard candy, chocolate and vitamins. Wheat, dried corn, white rice, dried beans, baking powder, powdered coffee, tea and cocoa, bouillon, salt, vegetable oils, powdered milk in nitrogen-packed cans and dried pasta can be stored indefinitely in the proper containers and conditions, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Water and Milk
Water is essential. Stock enough water for each person to have 1 gallon per day. Under normal circumstances, people need to drink at least 2 quarts per day, and extra is needed for hygiene and cooking, according to the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management. Milk can be stored for an emergency. Choose powdered milk, nonperishable pasteurized milk and canned evaporated milk.
