After deciding to host a charity fundraiser, it is time to determine the type of event you would like to organize. Small-scale fundraisers may take less time and energy to organize, but also may equal a smaller amount of funds raised. A large-scale event requires time, manpower and likely some money to spend organizing the event. By considering your options for events, you will be able to determine your best option for raising funds for a good cause.
Step 1
Organize an event at a local school or church that requires minimal time and planning, according to the Association for International Cancer Research. Examples include a bake sale, charity football game or students paying to wear jeans or another non-uniform clothing to for the day.
Step 2
Plan a "-thon" event, such as a marathon, walkathon, bowlathon. These events require participants to gain sponsors who will contribute. For the example of a walkathon, sponsors could pay 50 cents for every mile walked. Hosting this type of event requires you to have enough participants to sign up and time to obtain sponsors.
Step 3
Organize a fundraising tournament, such as a golf or poker tournament, according to Fundraiser Help. Speak with a local golf course about donating or discounting a venue and obtain sponsors for each hole. Local businesses also can contribute prizes for skills challenges, such as closest to the pin or hitting a hole in one.
Step 4
Host an auction fundraiser, such as a date auction or silent auction. A date auction involves local male and female volunteers agreeing to go on dates with winning bidders. A silent auction requires you and other volunteers to gather items from area businesses to be auctioned off. You can host this online if you do not have an ideal location. A silent auction also can be incorporated into other events, such as a walkathon or relay.
Step 5
Plan a full-scale charity fundraising gala. These black-tie events require significant time and preparation, but can help to raise large amounts of money. These types of events often involve serving a dinner and/or having musical entertainment. Silent auction events also can be incorporated into this type of fundraiser. You can solicit sponsorships from local businesses and other area sponsors to increase the amount of funds raised.
Tips and Warnings
- Have items and locations donated whenever possible to reduce the charity's cost for hosting the event. These donations are tax-deductible for many businesses, providing them a financial benefit.
