Handlebar grips are an important piece of bicycle equipment that give riders an extra level of protection when cycling as well as allowing easy control and access to the brakes and gears on the handlebars. Handlebar grips can be installed relatively easily with the use of a few common household items and without the need for expensive professional assistance.

Step 1

Loosen the brake and gear changers on the handlebars with an Allen wrench. Push them into the middle of the bars to provide enough space to easily work on the grips.

Step 2

Remove the existing grips by sliding a screwdriver underneath the surface of the grip and spraying in some WD40 using the supplied applicator. Using your hands twist the grips to spread the lubricant around the bars. Gently twist the grips off the end of the handlebars.

Step 3

Remove any excess WD40 from the handlebars using your cloth. Take the new grips and liberally spray in your hairspray. Work quickly to twist the grips onto the handlebars; the hairspray will act as a lubricant to make this task much easier.

Step 4

Set your grips in their required position. Leave them in position for approximately 15 minutes so that the hairspray has time to set; this will provide an extra adhesive for the grips which will help to keep them in place.

Step 5

Return the brake and gear shifters to their original places and secure them with the Allen wrench.
