Posting your resume online can help you land a job quicker and more easily. According to career advice website Quint Careers, thousands of resume sites exist, so you shouldn't have a problem finding a place that fits your needs. Unless you have a specific need, such as wanting a resume designed or posted for you, you shouldn't pay to post a resume online. There are many free sites available for you to use if you're willing to do the searching.

Step 1

Create a resume in plain-text format. Italicized text, bulleted lists and other formatting is often lost when a resume is posted online. Even if it looks fine to you, the text might come up garbled for those using a different browser. Many resume sites also ask you to paste your resume into a form in plain text. If you don't have it already written, you'll have to type the whole text directly into the form.

Step 2

Limit personal information. According to career site Riley Guide, you should only choose resume sites that allow you to limit who has access to your personal contact information. Sites that post your address and phone number for everybody to see are a bad idea. Instead, choose a site that requires posters to register or even contact you by email to request permission before they can access your personal data. For public posting sites, use only an email address or cell phone number and avoid more personal details like address and home phone number.

Step 3

Make a list of job boards where you'd like to post your resume. Job boards such as Monster.com, Career Builder or Yahoo! HotJobs allow you to upload your resume to a database where prospective employers can search for a good match. Each site has its own specifications regarding format, length and the type of information you need to include, so you'll need to read guidelines to make sure you're posting an acceptable resume.

Step 4

Look for industry-specific job boards. These boards allow you to target your own industry, so you don't waste time with more general searches. This only works if you're looking for specific work, rather than applying for general management or office work. Job boards are available for anything from teaching to hospitality and tourism to writing and publishing.

Step 5

Add your resume to bulletin boards such as Craigslist. Craigslist has the advantage of allowing you to post in a specific city or state of your choice, so you can target your search to the area where you really want to work. According to Careerzition, you should post your entire resume in Craigslist as you would in any other job board. Posting only a few sentences or a paragraph about what you're looking for will rarely cause potential employers to call.

Tips and Warnings

  • Depending on the website, resumes might expire after a certain period of time or get pushed back by newer uploads. Either delete and reload or update your resume every few weeks.
