Perfectly perched on Puget Sound, Seattle is the gateway to the Pacific rim, drawing multicultural foods and lifestyles to its neighborhoods. A relatively small city, Seattle is easily enjoyed on foot as you become familiar with its nighttime rhythm. Restaurants, activities and sightseeing will enrich your visit to the city.
Local Dining
There are several ethnic neighborhoods in Seattle, the largest perhaps being the International District. Packed with authentic Asian eateries, including Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese and Korean specialties, it will not disappoint. If you prefer experimenting in your own kitchen, visit the famous Uwajimaya Grocery and Gift Shop first.
One of Seattle's newest neighborhoods, Belltown, is on fire at night with fantastic restaurants and music. The jazz scene resides here with venues both large and intimate. For a hot night out, visit The Buenos Aires Grill for some of the best Argentinian parrillada, specialty grilled meats, while falling in love with the professional Tango dancers twisting atop your table.
A local and national historical Scandanavian district, Ballard, just north of Seattle is home to the Ballard Locks, and Old Ballard now claims not only Nordic food, but an "eclectic array of cafes from Cajun to Asian."
Parks With Views
A gorgeous nighttime view of the city skyline is observed from across Elliott Bay on the tip of Alki Beach in West Seattle. Stroll along the walkways up the shore and among the bonfires to find more active nightlife, especially on weekends. For cycling or skating, exercise paths are usually busy, but hardly overcrowded.
From California Ave SW, Hamilton Viewpoint Park probably has best whole-city view encompassing the Sound and ferries, Alki beach, the Olympic mountain range and wildlife. Back over on the mainland, Kerry Park on Queen Anne hill and Gas Works Park which sits on 20 acres at Lake Union, also provides captivating views.
Hoof It
Walking a city is the best way to get to know it. Begin your stroll at the south end of town in Pioneer Square, the center of history and culture. Visit the Klondike National Historic Park or the Art Walk the first Thursday of each month, popular for over 40 years. Continue north to explore Pike Place Market between Western and 1st Avenues., the original Starbucks, and among the narrow streets and alleys you will find highly-rated seafood grills, Native American and Latin cuisine. Veering northwest, you will end up at the base of the Space Needle in lower Queen Anne. After a ride to the top, enjoy true Northwest fine dining in the revolving restaurant.
Entertainment at the Piers
Waterfront piers host an array of activities. Cruise ships, tour boats and ferries leave the docks regularly. More permanent fixtures include a carousel and arcade, oddity shops and summer concerts at Pier 57. Guest boat slips are available at Belltown Pier 66. Public trails, bike and exercise paths run along both shores of Elliott Bay.
What To Bring
Bring a jacket or light wrap as the winds crossing Alki Beach and the piers will bring on a chill even in summer. If you don't mind labeling yourself a tourist, an umbrella usually comes in handy, too.
