Dandruff is a stubborn condition of the scalp that can affect toddlers. One common form of dandruff found in young children is called seborrheic dermatitis. The Parenting and Child Health website explains that sometimes the itchy patches on the scalp are greasy, and cause flakes to appear in the hair and on the clothing. Treating toddler dandruff requires persistence, and may be difficult depending on the cause. Consult a health care professional before attempting any treatment on your toddler's scalp.

Antidandruff Shampoo

There are various antidandruff shampoos available over-the-counter. Ingredients in these products include moisturizers, vitamins and an active ingredient like salicylic acid that helps slough off dead skin and dry up excess oil. Toddlers shouldn't be treated with this type of shampoo without the advice of a health care professional. Antidandruff shampoos are not tear-free like other toddler haircare products, and can cause moderate burning if the shampoo enters the child's eyes. Antidandruff shampoos should be used once per day for maximum improvement of the scalp condition.

Tea Tree Oil

Raw tea tree oil can burn the skin if it isn't diluted before being applied to the scalp. The Parenting and Child Health website explains that tea tree oil can kill some fungi and may improve dandruff in some toddlers. Any signs of a skin irritation or burning indicate a sensitivity to the treatment, and it is also possible for a toddler to be allergic to tea tree oil. An over-the-counter haircare product containing the oil can reduce the risk of complications often associated with raw tea tree oil, but always check with a health care provider before applying tea tree oil to your toddler's scalp.

Oil Treatment

Apply a slightly warm oil, such as olive oil, to the scalp and cover it with a shower cap overnight. In the morning, your toddler's hair can be shampooed with a mild cleanser, and brushed or combed thoroughly to remove loosened patches of skin. MedlinePlus suggests rubbing mineral oil into your child's scalp and wrapping it with warm washcloths for up to an hour before shampooing.

Steroids

For moderate cases of toddler dandruff, a physician may prescribe a shampoo or lotion containing a corticosteroid. This lotion or shampoo is to be used in small areas of the scalp at a time, states MedlinePlus. The treatment is repeated twice per day until the condition improves, or for as long as prescribed.
