Golf takes years to master---learning how to swing correctly can take a long time too. However, one or two good swings per round can keep you coming back for more. One of the swing problems you're likely to encounter is blocking the ball. This type of swing is typified by a tee shot or fairway shot that angles sharply to the right.

Step 1

Line up with your left shoulder facing the target when you want to hit the ball correctly and avoid blocking the ball. Many golfers who have this problem think they can correct this swing error by opening their left shoulder as they stand over the ball. However, instead of hitting the ball or even pulling it slightly, open shoulders tend to get the hands to the ball late and that results in a blocked shot. Keep your left foot directly underneath your left shoulder and make sure both feet are about shoulder width apart. Play the ball midway in your stance to avoid blocking the ball.

Step 2

Take a firm grip before you hit the ball. Golfers who block the ball may have a very loose grip. If the grip is not firm enough, the club head will slip and slide as contact is made---and the ball will veer off to the right.

Step 3

Use a full backswing to avoid blocking the ball. Golfers need to get full rotation from their hips and shoulders in order to hit the ball squarely. If you don't take a full backswing, you won't get either. As a result, the club head won't meet the ball squarely, and it'll block the ball off to the right.

Step 4

Slow your swing. This can be a difficult concept for many new and high-handicap golfers because the key to getting distance is club head speed at impact with the ball. A faster swing creates more power. However, when the swing is too fast, the upper body moves too fast for the lower body and you will have to compensate for this speed by tilting your back. This will cause the ball to go directly off to the right.

Step 5

Finish your swing by following through completely. Many golfers are anxious and they want to see the product of their swing. As a result, they pick up their head and stop their swing. Keep your head down and your eyes focused on the rear and center portion of the ball. Make sure your arms are at shoulder height in order to finish your swing correctly.
