The exercise ball goes by many names including physio ball, swiss ball, stability ball and fitness ball. Made of durable rubber, an exercise ball typically measures 45 cm, 55 cm or 65 cm in diameter. Exercise balls arrived in the 1960s as part of physical therapy and rehabilitation. Once the fitness world recognized how you could develop core strength and balance with an exercise ball, the balls became a staple for athletes and the average gym goers. After purchasing an exercise ball, you will need to properly inflate it.
Step 1
Lay the deflated ball on the floor to allow some of the folds and creases to flatten. Place the inflation hole face up.
Step 2
Mark the maximum inflation diameter, found on the packaging or the ball itself by the inflation hole, on a wall with a pencil or tape.
Step 3
Inflate the ball halfway using the pump that comes with the ball or a bicycle pump or electric pump. Place the valve plug in the inflation hole. Allow the ball to sit overnight to give the rubber material a chance to stretch.
Step 4
Remove the valve plug and finish inflating the exercise ball until it reaches the height of the mark you made on the wall. Replace the valve plug in the inflation hole.
