The umbilical cord plug, or stump, is the short piece of umbilical cord that remains after the cord is clamped and cut after birth. This plug contains no pain-sensitive nerves, according to the Mayo Clinic, but the area around the plug can become sensitive or sore if the plug is snagged on clothing or forcibly removed. Until the plug falls off, which typically occurs about 14 days after birth, it is important to keep it dry and exposed to encourage healing and prevent infection.
Step 1
Fold your newborn's diaper below the umbilical cord plug so that air can reach the cord and to prevent contact with urine. Disposable diapers are available with a cutout in the top to fit around the plug.
Step 2
Dress your baby in a short, loose shirt and no pants when the weather is warm. This will encourage air circulation and speed drying of the umbilical plug.
Step 3
Buy two-piece outfits for your newborn. One-piece outfits, such as rompers, overalls and onesies, reduce air circulation and might press the plug into your newborn's abdomen, causing discomfort and interfering with healing. Two-piece outfits also provide easier access to the umbilical plug for cleaning.
Step 4
Cover the plug with a small, sterile gauze if you must dress your newborn in pants or other clothing that might press against or snag the plug. This will help prevent irritation and injury and reduce the risk of infection. Remove the gauze and extra clothing as soon as possible.
