As its name suggests, protein powder is a high-protein substance that can be blended with other things to create a nutritious mixture—most often a drink. Post-Workout Recovery
The most common way protein powder is used is immediately after a workout, when it is mixed with water or milk to create a protein shake. Taking protein after a workout accelerates the body's natural healing process by helping repair muscles that were taxed during the workout. Meal Replacement
Another popular use for protein powder is to replace another meal. Meal replacement shakes typically come in individual serving packets and can easily be mixed in shaker cups. Whey protein is a key ingredient in most meal replacement shakes, though other types of protein such as casein can be included as well.
Overnight Muscle Growth
Although whey protein is preferred for lean muscle growth, it's not the only type of protein powder that can benefit you. Use casein protein if you want your powder to work over a longer period of time. Casein protein powder is usually consumed right before bed so that it can help repair your muscles overnight and prevent them from breaking down while you sleep. This method can be used in conjunction with post-workout whey protein shakes and meal replacement shakes.
Other Mixtures
Though shakes are prevalent in protein powder use, you can also use the powder in other recipes. You can use protein powder to make high-protein versions of peanut butter, Jell-o, cottage cheese and coffee. Put some protein powder in virtually any mixture or smoothie you make, and it will give you a protein boost.
