Light brown to medium brown spots that appear on your skin may be freckles or they may be the result of sun damage. These spots are usually called age spots or liver spots but in truth these spots are the skin's response to being exposed to excess UV rays. Fortunately the damage occurs on the surface of the skin and many spots can be faded by using an at-home skin care routine. The more consistently you treat your spots, the more likely they are to grow fainter
Step 1
Dab lemon juice on your spots. The citrus acid is a natural whitener. Avoid uneven lightning by dabbing carefully with a soaked swab on only your most prominent age spots.
Step 2
Apply creams or lotions that are fortified with Vitamin A or C. The antioxidants in these vitamins will help fade your spots and protect your skin against free radicals.
Step 3
Dip the end of a swab in some hair bleaching cream and touch carefully to your spots every other day for three days to test for sensitivity. Continue using if your skin isn't irritated.Use a hair bleaching cream with those formulas made for bleaching facial hair. The milder concentration of hydrogen peroxide will be less likely to cause irritation.
Step 4
Invest in creams containing hydroquinone and tretinoin. The hydroquinone is a bleaching agent. Use it in combination with the tretinoin which promotes cell turnover and reveals fresher skin.
Step 5
Use a sunscreen to protect your skin and prevent your age spots from returning. Reapply throughout the day if you sweat or are under the sun for extended periods of time.
Tips and Warnings
- Exfoliating your skin will help thin down your age spots although you shouldn't attempt to remove spots by abrading them.
- Never use household bleach directly on your skin. Any product you use should contain less than 12 percent hydrogen peroxide.
