Getting in better shape by exercising is a decision that will allow you to live a healthier life. To lose 10 lbs. through exercise, you need to do cardiovascular exercise as well as strength training. If your commitment is strong and you exercise consistently, you can lose 10 lbs. You also need to eat a healthy diet and drink at least 64 oz. of water every day. Consult your physician before beginning any exercise program.

Interval Training

Interval workouts are intense calorie burners that will help you drop those 10 lbs. You can run, bike, swim or power walk for your interval training. After warming up and then stretching, run hard for one lap at the track. Follow that by jogging for one lap. Then run hard for a lap and jog the next lap. Keep this up until you have run hard for four laps and jogged four laps. You can do another four hard laps followed by four jogged laps before you leave the track. This is high-intensity work and you should limit yourself to three interval training sessions per week.

Strength Training

A strength training workout is essential for losing weight. Not only will strength training add muscle, it will also burn fat. If you do exercises with free weights, you will need a training partner to spot you while you are lifting weights. The bench press, the pec fly and the dumbbell pullover are three of the weight-training exercises you can do. If you don't have a training partner, circuit training will provide a workout for your chest, shoulders, glutes, abs, core muscles, hamstrings and lower legs. You can also do strength training work by doing push-ups, pull-ups and ab crunches.

Cardiovascular Training

On the days that you are not doing interval training, do cardiovascular work. Instead of running hard, you can jog, walk or swim. The key is to do whatever exercise you chooser for at least 30 minutes to get your heart rate up and that you will burn the calories you need to lose 10 lbs. If you have been doing interval sprinting, you might want to swim or ride a bike for your cardiovascular exercise. Do it at about three-quarters speed to meet your target heart rate.
