Circular barbells are a type of piercing jewelry with a horseshoe shape. The jewelry consists of a curved bar with a bead on either end. The beads unscrew to allow the jewelry to be inserted and removed. Piercing areas in which circular barbells are commonly worn include septums, lips, earlobes and nipples. Circular barbells are a particularly good choice for facial piercings, as they can be removed and inserted more quickly and easily than captive bead rings. This makes them ideal for people whose jobs require them to remove their body jewelry during the day.
Step 1
Choose an internally threaded circular barbell. On internally threaded jewelry, male beads screw into a female bar. Externally threaded jewelry has the threads on the bar itself, with female beads, and can irritate your piercing when inserted.
Step 2
Disinfect new jewelry by washing it with antimicrobial soap such as Satin, Technicare or Provon for three full minutes. Dry with a clean paper towel.
Step 3
Wash your hands and your piercing with antimicrobial soap and warm water. Dry with another clean paper towel.
Step 4
Unscrew one bead from your circular barbell, twisting to the left.
Step 5
Dip the other end of the barbell in water-based lubricant.
Step 6
Gently ease the jewelry through the piercing and wipe off excess lubricant with a paper towel.
Step 7
Screw the bead you took out back into your jewelry, twisting to the right. Check to make sure both beads are tight.
Tips and Warnings
- If you have trouble inserting your jewelry, you may wish to purchase a surgical steel taper in the same gauge as your piercing. Butting the end of the barbell up against the taper and pushing the taper out as you push the jewelry in can help you guide the circular barbell into place.
