What To Look For

Summer hiking boots differ from winter hiking boots in the level of insulation in the boots. However, the goal of the boot is still the same--to provide comfortable support in cross-country walking or hiking situations. Look for boots or shoes with adequate arch support that fits your foot and quality material that will breath allowing heat and water vapor from sweat to disperse from the foot. Also look for internal cushioning of the sole and a rugged outer sole. Summer hiking boots are more likely to be in a low-topped running shoe style than winter hiking boots. Color is seldom a consideration in the selection of hiking boots.

Common Pitfalls

Not all summer hiking boots are waterproof. Some manufacturers prefer a more lightweight material that allows better air movement and dries quickly. Whether this is important depends on the conditions the hiker will encounter. If you are hiking only high desert trails with dry and hot conditions, waterproofing is not an issue. If the summer hiking trails include mountain streams and other cool water areas, waterproofing is worth the tradeoff of less breathability. Also, summer hiking boots are available with both a high or low top. The low top is cooler, providing less material and constriction around the ankle and upper foot, but giving less ankle support in rough terrain.

Where To Buy

Summer hiking boots are available online and at sporting good and outdoor supply stores. Shoes of any kind are best purchased where you can try them on and confirm the fit. Look for a store that has a selection of shoes to choose from. Confirm the return policy of any online retailer in case you need to return a summer hiking boot that doesn't fit.

Cost

As of August 2010, the price of summer hiking boots ranged from about $200 to $50 depending on manufacturer and style. The price doesn't seem to be dependent on the height of the top with both high and low top hiking boots available in the entire price spectrum.
