N95 respirator masks are protective devices designed to prevent the inhalation of airborne particles, but they also block droplets, splashes and sprays of liquid from entering your nose and mouth. The "95" in N95 means that the mask, when tested, blocks at least 95 percent of very small airborne particles, according to the Food and Drug Administration. N95 respirators are designed to be used once and then disposed of. Masks can be designated for public or occupational use.
Step 1
Hold the N95 respirator mask in your hand, with the nosepiece at your fingertips and the straps hanging freely.
Step 2
Position the respirator on your face. Place the bottom part of the respirator under your chin, with the nosepiece up.
Step 3
Pull the top strap of the respirator over your head, positioning it high on the back of your head. Pull the bottom strap over your head and place it around your neck, positioning it below your ears.
Step 4
Press the nosepiece of the mask down and inward with your thumb and forefinger to conform to the shape of your nose.
Step 5
Cover the mask completely with both hands, and breathe. If air leakage is detected around the nose, adjust the fit by pressing the nosepiece of the mask again to fit your nose. Adjust the straps if you detect leakage around the edges.
Tips and Warnings
- Facial hair interferes with the fit of an N95 respirator mask; if you have facial hair, the mask might not provide full protection.
- N95 masks are not recommended for children. If you have medical conditions that affect your ability to breathe, check with your doctor before wearing an N95 mask. Dispose of the mask after wearing and wash your hands thoroughly after touching the mask.
