The oils from fatty fish such as salmon, tuna and sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, a type of fat that can have benefits to human health. While omega-3 fatty acids have a clear benefit for cardiovascular function and fetal development, other uses of fish oil may be more controversial. Individuals should consult a physician about the potential uses of fish oils as well as the possible side effects of omega-3 supplementation.

Prevent Death From Heart Disease

A number of independent clinical studies show that fish oil and omega-3 fatty acid supplementation reduce the risk of death from heart disease. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality confirms that fish oil not only prevents death associated with heart disease but also significantly reduces overall risk of death in general. According to MedlinePlus, clinical studies also show that fish oil can reduce the incidence of secondary heart attack and death in individuals who have already suffered from a heart attack. A number of the people in these clinical studies were already using certain heart drugs, suggesting that fish oil and omega-3 fatty acid supplementation can enhance the benefits of certain heart medications.

Lower Triglyceride Levels

There is considerable scientific evidence that regular intake of fish oil and omega-3 fatty acids can lower blood levels of triglycerides. MedlinePlus explains that a number of research studies show that regular consumption of fish oil beneficially effect levels of triglycerides in the blood. Triglycerides are a type of fat that can contribute to arterial blockage and heart disease. The effects of fish oil on triglyceride levels may increase levels of good cholesterol but may also raise levels of bad cholesterol.

Maintain Heart Rhythm

MayoClinic.com explains that fish oil not only helps to prevent heart disease, but also helps the heart to maintain regular rhythms and prevents arrhythmias, a key factor in heart-related deaths. The beneficial effects of fish oil on preventing arrhythmia-associated deaths is particularly apparent in people who have heart disease or have already had a heart attack. A number of studies described by MedlinePlus also show that fish oil and omega-3 fatty acid supplementation can reduce blood pressure. Blood pressure, however, is lowered by only a small amount. While there is substantial evidence showing that fish oil is beneficial to cardiovascular health, fish oil alone may not significantly reduce blood pressure.

Reduce Cancer Risk

Fish oil supplementation may reduce the risk of developing certain cancers. The American Cancer Society describes a number of independent research studies showing that fish oil supplementation can prevent cancer in certain populations. For instance, fish oil supplementation reduced the risk of developing breast cancer by more than 30 percent in post-menopausal women.

Brain Development During Pregnancy

Omega-3 fatty acids play a critical role in the growth of the brain and nervous system, particularly in a developing fetus. Omega-3 fatty acids also have a number of important functions in maintaining the health of a mother during pregnancy. The American Pregnancy Association describes studies showing women who use omega-3 fatty acid and fish oil supplementation can safely improve the development of the brain and visual system of their babies without risk of exposing themselves to potentially toxic trace metals that may be present in commercially harvested fish meat.
