Basketball can be a fun sport that you, your family and neighborhood can enjoy; however, mounting a basketball goal to its platform can be a difficult task if you are not mechanically inclined. Installing a basketball goal can be made easier with multiple people and can be a great bonding experience, so feel free to invite people to lend a hand. Once installed, you will be able to hone your skills on the court and enjoy the socialization opportunities it provides as a community gathering spot.

Step 1

Ensure that the basketball platform has been properly set up or installed. Basketball platforms can be mobile or stationary and will dictate if a ladder is necessary to mount the goal.

Step 2

Place rim gasket between basketball hoop and backboard.

Step 3

Insert bolts through hoop, gasket and backboard so that the end where the nut will be attached is on the backboard side. Typically there are four bolts included in a basketball installation kit to correspond to the four holes in the hoop frame, gasket and backboard.

Step 4

Screw bolts until they are tight on the hoop, gasket and backboard.

Step 5

Check balance on the goal by using the level. Sit the assembled goal upright to check.

Step 6

Attach the netting to the basketball hoop.

Step 7

Lift the basketball goal up the ladder to secure it to the platform section.

Step 8

Screw remaining bolts or screws to the platform. Normally there are four corners of support for a basketball goal, so you should install them accordingly. Also, some goals have mounting arms to place the basketball goal further away from the platform. Follow steps 9, 10 and 11 if this is the case.

Step 9

Attach mounting arms to the basketball goal. Each arm will typically have two bolts and four washers needed to attach it to one side of the goal. Screw these bolts in for each arm on to the goal.

Step 10

Mount arms and goal assembly to basketball platform. There will normally be four attachment points for the assembly and the platform. Screw the top bolt of each arm respectively on each side and then screw in the bottom bolts.

Step 11

Remeasure the basketball goal with the level for proper horizontal and vertical placement.

Tips and Warnings

  • Leveling the basketball goal is a fundamental for regulation play. Getting a basketball official to check the goal for proper alignment is highly recommended. Install backboard and platform guards to the basketball goal to increase your safety from injury when playing.
  • Always have another individual present when lifting the goal up the ladder and mounting it. There is potential to fall off of the ladder when installing the goal.
