Healthy hair appears smooth and silky. Chemical services such as perms, relaxers and color, thermal styling, chlorine from pools and even the wind and sun damage hair, causing it to become unhealthy. Sometimes, even when hair is healthy, it is not smooth and silky. Naturally curly hair, for instance, usually appears dry and frizzy even when it is in extremely healthy condition. There are steps you can take to get your hair smooth and silky.

Step 1

Shampoo and condition your hair with a smoothing shampoo and conditioner only when your hair absolutely needs it. Leave the conditioner on for at least 5 minutes.

Step 2

Detangle your hair with a wide-toothed comb. Avoid using brushes on your hair as they snag and snarl hair, causing breakage and frizz.

Step 3

Air dry your hair and avoid using any thermal styling tools. If you must thermally style your hair, use a blow dryer set on cool. Turn your flat iron and curling iron to the lowest possible setting, and limit the number of times you use them.

Step 4

Work a dime-sized amount of silk serum through your hair every time you style and throughout the day as needed.

Step 5

Condition your hair weekly with an intensive conditioning treatment. Choose a treatment specifically formulated for your hair type.

Step 6

Trim your hair every six to eight weeks to remove split ends and keep hair looking healthy from root to tip.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you have naturally curly hair, you may have to chemically relax you hair to achieve smooth and silky hair. Chemical relaxers remove curl and frizz when used on certain hair types. On others, they cause damage, dryness and frizz. If your hair is wavy and shiny, you do not need a relaxer. If your hair is curly, dull and frizzy, you might want to consider one or at least talk to your stylist about the option.
