Home Remedies for Thyroid Disorders

The thyroid controls many of the functions within the body, MayoClinic.com reports. It secretes thyroxin, which helps the organs to work properly. When the thyroid does not function properly, one of two disease effects usually exist. In hyperthyroidism, the thyroid secretes too much thyroxin, causing the body to overreact, which produces symptoms of bulging eyes, dry skin and an increased heart rate. In hypothyroidism, the body functions slowly, causing increased weight gain and constipation. Home remedies can help to keep the effects to a minimum.

Diet Modifiers

Weight problems occur with both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, MedlinePlus reports. In hyperthyroidism, the person finds it difficult to gain weight and usually has an underweight condition. She will need to eat foods higher in calories to gain the weight. Low weight links to a poor immunity response to diseases in general. In hypothyroidism, the person gains excess weight because the problem slows down the metabolism. This makes it easy to gain weight and difficult to lose it. The person will need to stay on a strict diet to prevent a large weight gain. Obesity can cause type 2 diabetes.

Stopping Caffeine Intake

The person suffering from hyperthyroidism will experience a faster heart rate, MayoClinic.com reports. He may experience palpitations in the chest. This disease also may cause problems with the heart rhythm.  Staying away from caffeine products in coffee, teas and soda will help keep the heart rate from accelerating.

Avoiding Excessive Sunlight

Avoiding extra sunlight will help protect the skin from dryness, MayoClinic.com reports. In hyperthyroidism, the skin can crack, become dry and develop a rash. The person's skin needs extra lubricant such as sunscreen to protect its surface. The person also can use body creams that make the skin feel better as well as protect it.

Eye Care

Hyperthyroidism sometimes affects the eyes, MayoClinic.com states. Graves disease, which causes the eyes to bulge and become dry, can occur because of hyperthyroidism. Applying extra lubricant such as over-the-counter or prescribed eye drops will help. Keeping the eyes moist by applying a warm washcloth also will help. Sunglasses worn outside will help protect the eyes from too much light and from drying out.

Edema

Hypothyroidism can cause edema, the medical term for fluid retention, MedlinePlus reports. Avoiding the use of table salt on food and eating low-sodium foods can help reduce it. Elevating the feet as well as wearing tight-fitting clothing also will help. The person also needs shoes that fit correctly to prevent pressure and sores from developing on her feet. The person needs to check her shoes periodically to see if she needs larger shoes. Redness on the boney areas on the feet can indicate the need for new, larger shoes.
