Pulmicort is a medication in a class of drugs known as corticosteroids. According to Drugs.com, Pulmicort works by preventing the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation, thus decreasing irritation and swelling in the airways. It is used in the treatment of asthma and lung disease. Pulmicort may be prescribed in conjunction with other medications and therapies. Side effects of Pulmicort are generally mild and may decrease over time.

Cold Symptoms

Pulmicort may cause cold symptoms in some users. Runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat or cough can occur, reports Drugs.com. These side effects may lessen as the body gets used to Pulmicort. The use of humidified air, throat lozenges, saline nasal spray and salt water gargle may help to lessen side effects. If these side effects occur in conjunction with fever, swollen lymph glands, difficulty breathing, sinus pain or pressure, or a yellow or green tinged mucous it may be a sign of a bacterial infection which requires medical treatment.

Insomnia

Some patients taking Pulmicort may develop insomnia. Insomnia is a difficulty falling or remaining asleep throughout the night. If this side effects becomes bothersome, a physician should be consulted regarding the use of a prescription sleep aid for relief.

Headache and Dizziness

Headache and dizziness may occur in patients taking Pulmicort. Those who experience these effects should use caution while driving or completing any activity which requires them to be awake and alert. Patients should inform their doctor if they currently take any other medications, since doing so may increase these effects. Patients can take an over-the-counter medication such as acetaminophen for the relief of occasional headache, as recommended by their physician.

Mouth Sores

Some patients using Pulmicort can develop white patches or sores on the lips or inside of the mouth. These symptoms may indicate the presence of a yeast infection in the mouth. To reduce the chance of developing an infection, users should rinse their mouth with water after using Pulmicort and wash the mask area of the face if using a nebulizer with a mask, explains Drugs.com.
