How to Decorate a Baby Nursery With a Rainforest Theme

Decorating the nursery is one of the many milestone tasks parents must tackle before the arrival of a new little one. Rather than stick with traditional pastel themes like farm animals, storybook characters or teddy bears, create a nursery that has a bolder theme. A nursery inspired by the rainforest is just as easy to design, and the result will make a memorable entry in the baby book.

Step 1

Research authentic rainforest flora and fauna at the library or online, taking note of the colors and textures you might want to incorporate into the nursery. The rainforest is home to plants, insects and animals found nowhere else in the world, and these should be showcased in any rainforest-inspired space.

Step 2

Select paint colors for the room. While simple, monotone walls can serve as a backdrop for other décor, a rainforest mural will transform the room into an exciting, bold space that evokes the feeling of being outdoors. A mural is easy to do with stencils, projected images that can be traced onto walls, or removable stickers in a rainforest theme.

Step 3

Add three-dimensional elements to the walls to give the room depth. Artificial plants can be stapled to walls to mimic the dense foliage of the rainforest, while stuffed animals can peek from behind furniture or over window treatments to give the illusion of a room filled with animal life.

Step 4

Select bedding inspired by some aspect of the rainforest. Leaf-patterned linens can fade into the backdrop, while brilliant animal patterns take center stage as a focal point of the room. Choose window treatments that complement the bedding and utilize some of the natural materials found in the rainforest, such as wood.

Step 5

Add accessories that enhance the rainforest theme. Most nurseries require a number of utilitarian pieces, but that does not mean those items have to be generic or boring. Incorporate the rainforest theme into every addition. For example, paint the diaper pail to look like a tree stump or wind a stuffed snake around the base and post of a floor lamp.
