"The Joy of Cooking" is one of the oldest surviving, constantly revised American cookbooks. According to The Joy Kitchen, while The Joy of Cooking sets the standard for American cooking, the book was initially rejected by publisher Bobbs-Merrill.
History
According to The Joy of Cooking website, Irma Rombauer wrote and self-published "The Joy of Cooking" in 1931. The cookbook has seen nine revisions and has been praised by such prominent chefs as Julia Child and Paula Deen. The 2006 edition of "The Joy of Cooking" included slow cooker recipes for the first time in the cookbook's history.
Size
The 75th anniversary edition of "The Joy of Cooking" is a 1,152-page hardcover book according to "Cook Books" by Janet Jarvits. Jarvits reports that "The Joy of Cooking" has sold over 18 million copies since its first printing over 75 years ago. "The Joy of Cooking" is comprised of over 4,500 recipes.
Inspiration
According to "The Joy of Cooking's" website, it has inspired a line of six cookbooks including "All About Cookies," "All About Breakfast," "All About Pasta," "All About Chicken," "All About Vegetarian" and "All About Soups." Each of these six cookbooks bears "The Joy of Cooking's" brand. Additionally, "The Joy of Cooking" has a website, The Joy Kitchen, maintained by Ethan Becker, Irma Rombauer's grandson.
