When exercising regularly in a gym, it is commonly accepted that you will firm up your body, tone your muscles, and improve your skin tone. However, it is not so well-known that performing exercises to work the facial muscles can have the same effect; muscles will fill out; sagging skin will tighten, and a youthful appearance can be restored by increasing muscle fibers through targeted face exercises.

Benefits

A three month study conducted by Dr. Gary L. Grove, Ph.D., concluded that performing facial exercises on a regular basis will result in a firmer, more elastic skin; there was also improvement in the areas of the face that were originally thought to be wrinkled due to unavoidable facial expressions. The study revealed the subjects with the most saggy and drooping faces, derived more noticeable benefits than their less wrinkled counterparts.

Programs

To exercise the face, it is not necessary to purchase a device, although there are several products on the market designed to help exercise the facial muscles. An exercise routine can be followed from one of the many books written on the subject, or you can keep an exercise schedule by visually mimicking a commercially available facial exercise video or DVD. It is also possible to devise your own custom routine to target your most problematic areas.

Exercises

Carole Maggio, developer of the "Facercise" program recommends the following exercises to tone a sagging face:
To enhance the eyes, place your middle fingers between your brows, and position your index fingers on the outer corners of your eyes. Look upward towards the top of your head. Lift your lower eyelid into a squint. You will feel the muscles on the outer eyes fluttering beneath your index fingers. Release the hold, and repeat 10 times, each time concentrating on the twitching movement of the muscles.
To regain or retain a smooth taut brow, place your fingers in a curved position above your eyebrows. Pull the skin down, and contract the frontalis or brow muscle, by lifting your brows upward. Hold the pose for a few seconds and release. Repeat 10 times.
To lift and tighten sagging cheeks, either sit or lie down, and open your mouth in an oval shape, with your lips wrapped over your teeth. Place your index fingers on the top of the fleshy part of the cheeks, and lift the corners of your mouth towards your temples, while keeping your lips over your teeth. You will feel the apple of your cheek rise. Repeat the movements quickly—around 35 times, twice a day for optimal results.
